Name: Catholic Church DOB: NA
Catholics represent the largest Christian denomination in America with about 65 million faithful in 2003. The 2001 census bureau estimates that 25.9% of the population of adults identify themselves as Catholics. It is even said that Catholics have represented up to 30% of the voting population in recent elections. Traditionally, Catholic voters have voted more for the Democratic Party, opting for civil rights and social security. However, in recent decades, the Catholic vote has changed and many voters are influenced through issues of abortion and gay marriage. As Catholics came out of poverty, they tended to vote less on religious issues and more on financial issues, leaning towards the Republican Party. This is coupled by the drifting apart of some Catholics from the church through questions of birth control usage and feminist issues. When it comes to personal issues such as marriage and the family, Catholics are usually conservative, but social issues concerning social justice they lean towards liberal. So, which is it?

I do not have any idea about it but I think Catholic Church is more or less conservative.

I would have to say that they are liberal. Even though I think it is kind of funny how many of them were willing to give up their beliefs when they started getting some money and had a taste of some wealth and wanted to protect it. Just proves one of my favorite point, you are only liberal until one of your interests is at stake.
Religion really has no place in how somebody votes. A person's religious beliefs should not be involved when they are making decisions for an entire country of people of all kinds of beliefs, including atheists.

In response to Opinionated SOB:
I agree that religion should not influence the political decisions, but unfortunately that is not the reality on the everyday government situations... If you say that Bush is not based on religious believes when he suggested to make it a Federal Ban on gay marriage, then what was he based on? It is all a religios influences.

The dictionary defines a democrat as people who believe that we are all created equal. The United States is defined as a democracy. Democrats tend to favor a system of government that is run by the people who live under that system. Republicans on the other hand are defined simply as of a nation or a party that elects representatives to manage things for them.
Having been raised Catholic, I would suspect that the church would support a more democratic form of government where all people are thought of as equal.
Whether this is labeled as conservative or liberal that is difficult to say. I am not a practicing Catholic, but I am a voting citizens of the United States and I vote for a government that looks towards equality not segration. I see Arnold Schwartzenager as a Republican in California that looks to segrate sectors of the population in California. For example, he provides tax exemptions for Indians, groups of people that promoted war in Southern california states in our countries history. Is the Catholic Church backing gambling and tax exemptions and segration of our people? Is the Catholic Church pro war? Is this simply a ploy to reap the monetary benefits that follow war-like tactics?
