Name: Barack Obama DOB: February 28, 2007
I have high hopes for Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL), and not just because he can give a good speech. As a civil rights lawyer who represented a working class urban district in the Illinois state legislature, Obama has all the trappings of a leader who could break conventions and be a serious voice for progressives on the national stage. Obama is supposed to a far left Liberal, but is he?
He is constantly described as just left of center or a centrist. A centrist who voted against Alito and Roberts, he is pro-abortion, against the death penalty, pro-gun control, votes to hike the minimum wage, against the Bush tax cuts, a global warming scaremonger and last but not least he wants socialist health care in this country. The American Conservative Union gave him a score of 8 out of 100 (0 being very Liberal and 100 being very Conservative) on Conservative issues.
So, is Obama a extreme left winged Liberal or a man pursuing the Presidency and moving to the center?

Like all politicians before they run, Obama is trying to look like he is not a radical. Hilary is doing the same thing.

It will be interesting to see how many concessions he will be willing to make in order to secure a shot at the presidency. It seems a shame that candidates need to do this; I would much rather that they were able to say and push for the things that they really believe in.

I think he is making all efforts to get presidency. No doubt he is an excellent speaker and I hope his first aim is to get the seat.

I think he's a liberal who is moving to the center to get more votes. I like a lot of his ideas, but they sound expensive.

Barack Obama is the first black candidate that I would feel comfortable voting for. I think he is liberal and will do a lot of good when it comes to helping out the working man.

I think that he'll be a fine candidate, but due to his support of gun control, not to mention that he's a democrat, I'd never vote for him. If Colon Powell were to run, regardless of party, I'd vote for him in a heart beat.

Like all politicians, Obama is the lastest player in the great game of Politics. Instead of thinking for themselves, politicians bend their beliefs to fit expectations of their parties and to seem appealing to the voters. Obama is nothing unusual here.

In response to Cass:I agree that Barack has the likeability factor for the Democratic party. If a Democrat was to become President I sure hope it is not Hillary.

In response to Thor:It is crazy to think that his voting record shows him to be one of the left most Politicians, yet the media has referred to him on numerous occassions as a centrist. I wonder who's side the unbiased media is on.

In response to sweetnothing:Honestly, I think that the media is trying to help him out. He's articulate -- something we haven't seen in awhile -- and photogenic. Both of these qualities make him a dream child for the media, especially coming after Bush.

We are so hung up on the whole looks thing, we sometimes are blinded by what the person beneath all that is really like. I am not so sure about him politically or what he really stands for. At this point I think they will say and do anything for the support of their party. Time will tell.......

In response to Cass:Who is the working man? As far as I can tell everyone is a working man or woman today. It is called survival.

In response to Peter:Look back to Arnold and all the promises he made. I now don't trust any of them. The go with whatever way the wind blows. Obama will say whatever we want to hear. Yes, he will make concessions.

In response to Cass:Some of those working men make alot of money. I had a painter that charged me$300. for one small room and it took him 2 hours. That is $150. per hour for the working man.
