Name: Tony Blair DOB: April 8, 2007
Blair is the Labour Party's longest-serving prime minister, the only person to have led the party to three consecutive general election victories, and the only Labour prime minister to serve more than one full consecutive term. The Labour party is supposed to be left of center on our political scale and have an ideology of Democratic socialism. All of this would make one think he is more Liberal, but is he?
Tony Blair is a member of a left of center political party, has conservative views, and is buddy buddy with President Bush. Is he Liberal or Conservative?

I agree tough call. Good to have somebody that doesn't follow strict party lines, however.

I think he tries to play the Liberal side but deep down inside he leans to the right. His answer would probably depend on who asks him, just like most of our politicians. He knows what answer you want to hear.

I think this is a tough one but I think on some of the occasions he seems to be liberal.

He is actually both. As a member of the labor party he is liberal, as a politician he leans toward the conservative side.

In response to BigD:I agree that he is a right leaning Liberal as can be seen by his stance on the war. He also did not gain any tree hugging points by being buddy buddy with Bush.

It would probably depend on who is asking him. He seems to be more of a centrist, especially his views on the war.

I have the impression that he is a bit on the conservative side from the party he belongs to. I'm not really a big fan of the guy, but I guess people there like him enough to keep him this long as primer minister.

Tony Blair is whichever side suits him and his party best at the time. I don't dislike the man, but I have a gut feeling that he's got a lot more skeletons hiding in his closet than anyone thinks. He's got to know how to play both party politics to keep them there.

Although Tony Blair has done some good job for his country, however he is a great politician and is capable to manage a balance between liberal and conservative.

I like the comments on Blair. To say he stands on whichever side will vote for is different from the US how?

Generally liberal although in the UK we don't really use the terms the same way that you do in the US. Towards the beginning of his Government he was a lot more liberal than he is now. His government oversaw a lot of very positive things but just lately with ID cards and the shooting of unarmed civilians it seems as though they've really swung the other way.

In response to kethni:That is horrible, hopefully your government can get back on track.

Thanks Sweetnothing. Fortunately there's very little support from the public or the media for ID cards or a more rightwing approach. Even the Conservatives don't support ID cards as they (normally the right-wing party) like to style themselves as being in support of individuals rights.

In response to kethni:I still see Blair as more conservative, and I wish we could some sort of ID cards here in the United States because our country is becoming over run with illegal immigrants.
