Title:
No Money in a Cure
Created on:
July 30, 2007
Since people in the United States happen to be the most medicated and most treated people around the globe, one has to wonder why we hear the word ‘treatment’ more often than ‘cure’. Cancer has been studied for multiple generations and, though we have found better ways to treat the disease, we still don’t have a surefire cure?
Is it possible that pharmaceutical companies are paying to have discovered cures – which are not owned by them – covered up?
With journals on DCA and 'Milk Therapy', one has to wonder if we found validity to our paranoia.

I agree with southboca that it is necessary to put an argument for starting a debate.

What the heck is Milk Therapy? I've never heard of it.

In response to Cass:Svanborg a researcher at Lund University in Sweden applied breast milk to cancerous lung cells, and all the cells died. Breast milk killed cancer cells. Hence, milk therapy. So far, it hasn't worked as well in real life applications

I think that if a cure was found the ego of the researcher would not let the information stay undisclosed. I know this is a pill popping society and that most would rather take a pill. I just don't see a conspiracy here.

In response to BigD:I agree. I think that there is also too much money at stake. How much do you think people would be willing to pay to be cured of cancer? My guess is about all the money they have and then some.

Even if there was a money dynamic, I think most pharmceutical companies would be far to scared of getting caught. More likely, however, is that they are simply funneling their resources elsewhere.

In response to Bella:I think there is a big difference between a cover up (which I don't think has happened) and just not committing a lot of funds to research (which I do think has happened.)

I would not be surprised in the least if this is going on. I think that medical research companies are all about the money and not about really wanting to help people.

I think that the pharmaceutical companies are really trying to keep us buying their products, and not finding a cure. With cancer, unfortunatelly I've b een too close to people suffering it, and it comes back even after taking it out with operations... so I don't know if there is a cure for it.

I think that where a company owns no patent, there isn't going to be large amounts of money in a cure but maybe we are looking at this the wrong way. By making pharmaceuticals companies non-profit organizations, maybe this would work. It would open up new funding schemes such as donations, still pay the workers and be the best for society in terms of treating illness. Maybe there is something I am not seeing as to why it would be feasible but it sounds like a good idea.

This is a capitalist nation people, and this practice is capitalism at it's worst. There can be no doubt that a powerful company making powerful profits, would do whatever was necessary to make sure nothing that lowers those profits hit the markets... especially a cure for a disease or disorder. Consider that a cure would not only lower their profits on "novelty" or treatment drugs, but would eliminate those profits. If a cure for cancer was found, several dozen pharmaceutical companies would go out of business, and neither those companies, nor our government, are going to allow that to happen.
