Title:
Rumsfeld Was Right and Torture Should Be Allowed in Interrogations
Created on:
December 4, 2006
Ever since the beginning of mankind, we have had all sorts of torment and persecution to interrogate and physically persuade victims. And, recently Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld was found to have authorized the mistreatment of detainees at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. Former U.S. Army Brigadier General Janis Karpinski, who ran the prison until early 2004, said she saw a memorandum signed by Rumsfeld detailing the use of harsh interrogation methods. But, is this such a bad thing?
The American public seems split on this topic. According to the a Newsweek poll, 44% of the public thinks torture is often or sometimes justified as a way to obtain important information, while 51% say it is rarely or never justified. A clear majority, 58%, would support torture to prevent a terrorist attack, but asked if they would still support torture if that made it more likely enemies would use it against Americans, 57% said no.

Sometimes there is a strict timelimit on how long we have to get certain information before people lose their lives over it. I think that sometimes it has to be "by any means necessary."

In some very rare cases, torture may be justified. But we need to place strict controls on who, how much, and why. Giving people too much power, opens the door wide for abuse. And, that's not ok.

I think under those circumstances the torture is judtified but we should ensure that it is not misused.

You've gotta be kidding me!!! It's not ok to physically torture people. Ever. As soon as you stoop to that level, you are no better than terrorists or dictators.

In response to Kat: How can you be against it when they are doing it to protect national security?

In response to teammate:You would walking a very thin line here. It would be tough to ensure that the torture was "humane". What is humane to one person may not be to another.
Is listening to Justin Timberlake 24 hours a day or being forced to eat only chocolate with no milk or water considered inhumane?

In response to Kat: If your child was in the hands of a terrorist who was threatening to cut his head off and a person who could tell the authorities your child's exact location was in custody, how far would you want the authorities to go to get that information before your child was killed?

In response to Demomom: Throughout history, governments around the world have proved time and again that they are not able to use physical torture with discretion. They don't even have a very good track record with limiting its use to guilty people. I'm OK with manipulating environment and using intimidation. I'm not ok with hurting people. I'll throw the question back at you: How far would you want the police to go because they thought that you knew where terrorists were holding my child and threatening to kill him?

There is a bomb at Disneyland and authorities find the lady who planted the bomb. Who would you want interrogating her, Jack Bauer or the ACLU?

If you only have the lady and not the bomb, you aren't sure she's the culprit....(Remember Iraq's WMDs?) So, we are back to the same scenario: There is a bomb at Disneyland and authorities think you planted the bomb. Are you ready for physical torture: waterboard torture, burns, chemical light sticks inserted up your anus, electrodes hooked up to your genitalia, being forced to masturbate in front of a camera, naked pictures of you leaked to the NY times wearing your birthdaysuit a hood and more? Give people/government an inch on physical torture and they'll take a mile. Our own soldiers and government have proved this. You want to use sleep deprivation, music played loudly, lie (say you are the Taliban while you interrogate) bring big old scary dogs into the interview? I'm OK with that. Why? If wrongly accused, I'd be OK (not happy about) that treatment. I don't want someone pulling out my fingernails and then saying..."Ooops. Sorry." Use a different standard, and that's the risk you and other Americans run. Our stance on torture also sets the standard for both allies and future enemies. If we say it's ok, we can hardly complain when our enemies use the same techniques on us.

Thanks, southboca...I was beginning to feel really alone on this one. Those are exactly my concerns on allowing physical torture.
