There Should NOT Be Hyphenated Americans

Title:

There Should NOT Be Hyphenated Americans

Created on:

March 5, 2007

A hyphenated American is someone who refers to himself as an African-American or Asian-American or Italian-American. Hyphenated Americans is something that should not be recognized. If you choose to accept America as your home then you are an American and only an American.

Because of the increasing number of people in America using hyphens, there is a declining number of people who consider themselves to be American first and foremost. We need to come together as a country and remember that we are all Americans!

Registered Independent Respond In response to kethni:From an Amrican point of view it has been seen as a nice way to maintain heritage and ethnic pride. The point of contention only arose when people stopped assimilating as quickly as in the past.

Registered Liberal Respond Who cares? I don't think anyone who chooses this is any less American so why sweat it?

Registered Independent Respond In response to mwilltru15:Sadly, the GOP has done a great deal to polarize the US against immigrants and Hispanics. That's why hyphenation is such a big deal.

Registered Independent Respond Although I do not have any objection in it, however I think that it polarizes the country.

Registered Independent Respond I think everyone has the right to identify with their heritage. I think many people, if living in another country all their life yet coming from American, would probably want to use the hyphen to keep to their heritage so why not let other people do it? If people must be patritoic to america, why not to their home countries at the same time?
